Babi-Baha'i Bibliographies
European Language Publications on the Persecution, Repression and Diaspora of the Baha'i Faith 1979 - current (August 2009)

This bibliography represents material published since 1979 on the general topics of the repression, persecution and diaspora of
the Baha'i community, principally affecting Iran and Egypt. The material includes publications published since 1979 but referencing earlier periods of persecution (1844-1979). No attempt has been made to be complete. In particular newspaper items and official documents from bodies such as parliaments, United Nations and other NGO's is too vast to include here. There are infrequent items in Persian language which are included because of their uniqueness or because useful abstracts exist for the material. This bibliography should contain the broadest sweep of material covering human rights, documenting the trials and persecutions, sociological and more recently anthropoligical studies of diasporic communities of Iranian Bahais living in locations such as Canada, United States and Australia and the responses of the Baha'i community to try and manage and counteract the oppression of their fellow believers in Iran, Egypt and other persecution inflexion points which occaisionally erupt elsewhere in the world. One very noticeable thing, to an insider at least, about the published material is that the vast majority originates one way or another out of the Baha'i community. Only recently has serious attention on the problematique of Baha'i persecution and the processes of adjustment in migratory lands begun to get the attention of the scholarly community in general. This is partly because the Baha'is have done a stirling job in documenting their experiences and bringing it to the attention of the press and decision makers but also because the persecution of the Baha'i community has to take it's place amongst the myriad of human failures and the catalog of human misery which have beset mankind during the lifetime of the religion. It is too soon to write the history of the persecutions since 1979 as events are still unfolding, but in the year that marks the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Republic of Iran, this bibliography is offered in the hope that it paves the way for someone to begin to write that history in the next few years and to have the present-day persecutions of the Baha'i community a receeding memory by that date also.At some future point this bibliography will be integrated into a digital repository using the Microsoft Zentity platform. Items for the bibliography will be gratefully received and can be sent to bibliographer(at)abs.org.nz. The database editions include selected abstracts.
