The source of inspiration for this term (dharr) in the early Shi'i cosmology and cosmogony lies in one of the more important and dramatic scenes which informs the whole spectrum of Islamic thought, namely the Primordial Covenant of Qur'an 7:171-2. It is there, in what seems to be pre-existence, that God addresses humanity in the form of particles or seeds (dharr) saying, 'Am I not your Lord?' (alastu bi-rabbikum) while the archetype or potential of all future generations of humanity responds with the loving reply, 'Yes' (bala). In light of the significance of this term for the Covenant in the Babi-Baha'i revelations it is surprising that there has only been but passing references to it in some secondary Baha'i sources. In this paper we will outline the history and background of this term and examine some of the interpretations or hermeneutics accorded to it by select examination of its use in Shi'ism, Shaykhism, and the Babi-Baha'i religions. Among other themes that will be touched upon in relation to 'alam-i-dharr is the hermeneutics of the pre-existence of souls, the question of free will and predestination, the seven stages of creation (maratib-i sab'ih), and the mystic colour hierarchies (alwan). The development of Baha'i in the context of the Young Ottomans and other "fathers" of Ottoman constitutionalism is explored and Alkan considers the Iranian reformers as well as the Young Turks in relation to the Babis in nineteenth-century Istanbul. This article examines a case of millennialism and violence that occurred just over 150 years ago. It tracks the events leading to the attempted assassination of Nasir al-Din Shah of Iran in 1852 by a small group of followers of the religion of the Bab, a religious leader who claimed to fulfill the prophecies of Shi'i Islam about the coming of the Imam Mahdi. The factors leading to the violence are analyzed and compared with other cases of millennialism and violence. The main factors that stand out in this case include: a pre-existing religious milieu that expected a violent, millennial event and engendered a radically dualist worldview, with the shah's government as the embodiment of an evil destined to be defeated and removed; a severe persecution of the group resulting in some followers' desire for revenge and a dramatic violent act that would bring divine intervention and ultimate victory; government removal of moderate leadership, leaving only radical extremist leaders; and the presence among the Tehran group of Babis, which carried out the attempted assassination, of a charismatic leader whom these Babis believed had access to a source of divine power that could make the plan achievable, when a more rational analysis would have demonstrated the opposite. A Babi community existed here as a development from an earlier Shaykhi community and Babis from Shahmirzad participated in the Shaykh Tabarsi upheaval. Later this Babi community became Baha'is. A number of prominent clerics of the area became Baha'is, the best known of whom was Haji Mulla 'Ali Akbar Shahmirzadi, who was known as Haji Akhund and was named by Baha'u'llah as a Hand of the Cause. Collected in 1860 in the town of Barfurush, it was published five years later by Boris Andreevich Dorn in Perso-Arabic characters. The text is the first known prose document based on natural speech in the modern Mazandarani language. The language of the text is fundamentally the same as that spoken today in the Persian province of Mazandaran, located south of the Caspian Sea. As one expects, however, there are certain extinct traits in the text, which could be identified only by comparison with other surviving Mazandarani documents of the same period. The text will contribute to the study of the largely understudied language of Mazandaran, particularly to its development since the composition of the text. Additionally the sacred books of the world not only predict global catastrophe but also an ensuing millennial world peace. This paper is a preliminary consideration of select Babi-Baha'i doctrines expository of apocalyptic symbolism associated with major Abrahamic religious prophecies. I will endeavour to show that many of the Baha'i interpretations of end-time catastrophe are best viewed in their evolving historical contexts. A brief consideration will be made of the war of the last days referred to in the canonical Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, as the battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16:14). A cursory examination of dimensions of the catastrophe and ensuing millennial peace by the central figures of the Baha'i religion will be set down. For several decades, some Baha'is have been troubled by expectations of concrete global catastrophe. Awareness of the fact that Babi-Baha'i sources anticipate numerous "catastrophes" with aspects that have already been outwardly realized or spiritually interpreted is not widespread in the contemporary Baha'i community. On occasion, both the Bab and Baha'u'llah undertook a courageous demythologization of apocalyptic scenarious anticipated in Biblical and Islamic scripture and tradition. It is the Baha'i belief that the "catastrophe" or the apocalyptic upheaval of the last days has very largely if not completely been realised in the troubled yet brilliant 20th century. The thesis basically assumes that in its early development (1844--1848), the movement may be seen merely as religiously dissenting from the mainstream of Shi'i tradition. In the course of history, however, and especially after the Bab, its founder, claimed in 1848 to be the return of the Hidden Imam and proclaimed the abrogation of Qur'anic shari'a, the Babi movement showed radical tendencies, thus threatening the established religious and political authorities. This later development (1848--1853) was characterized by armed revolts by the Babis against the government troops. This thesis also examines the nature of Babi religious dissent and demonstrate that the Babi revolts were to a large extent based on religious motives. In reality, things are never so simple: relations between opposing viewpoints are characterized by dynamism rather than static confrontation. In a sense, heterodox movements may often be no more than extreme expressions of orthodox values. In the case of Islam, the most extreme expression of an "orthodox" versus "heterodox" antagonism is provided by the emergence of Bahaism as a distinct religion from an originally orthodox Shii matrix. An examination of the antecedents of Bahaism in the nineteenth century-Shaykhism and Babism-shows the ways in which heterodoxy was, in a sense, a development of orthodox belief, rather than an aberration.
