Publications on the Bábi Religion 1844 - current (August 2009) This bibliography represents an estimated 80% or better of the significant publications in European langauges on the Babi religion . It is therefore known to be incomplete especially in Eastern European, Scandinvaian Spanish and Russian sources. It is a work in progress and does not aim to be completist especially with respect to newspapers or ephemeral references. It favours sources from outside the Baha'i community and leans towards scholarly material rather than popular materials but also attempts to include polemical material as well. There are major difficulties defining the extent of the Babi religion. This material overlaps significantly with material which would also be incorporated into a Baha'i bibliography. In some cases this is because the material covers both religious movements or the author conflates Baha'i history and theology with Babism. From a Baha'i point of view the Babi religion ended with the mystical experiences of Baha'u'llah in the Siyah-Chal in late 1852. Others will define the end of the Bab'i movement with the formal declaration of Baha'u'llah as the future prophetic figure specified by the Bab in Baghdad in 1863. Others will stretch this period into the 1870's when the divergence between the two competing claimants to sucessorship finally ruptured. There is an argument to treat the Babi-Baha'i religion as a fused entity and one to treat them as quite distinct. This bibliography does not specifically attempt to include material on Azali Babism as that is a specialised field of its own and few sources are in European languages. The last major update was in 2007. At some future point this bibliography will be integrated into a digital repository using the Microsoft Zentity platform. Items for the bibliography will be gratefully received and can be sent to bibliographer(at)abs.org.nz. |
